The period when the animals descend to the lower regions, announces the arrival of the coldest season. Nature and its inhabitants are getting ready for winter sleep.

Biogradska gora National Park closes its gates for visitors from 1st of December 2023 to 1st of May 2024, in order not to disturb the rich animal life during the winter months.

“The protection of nature and its ecosystems is the primary goal to which we are uncompromisingly committed. All animals from the park in this period slowly descend towards Lake Biograd and we want to avoid disturbing the animal world in this way, as well as possible illegal activities”, said the director of this park, Mrs. Marija Dulović. She also added that the park could be opened earlier which will primarily depend on the snow cover and weather conditions.

We emphasize that, in accordance with the recommendations of the Mountaineering Association of Montenegro, during the winter season, the system of pedestrian-mountaineering and cycling trails is closed due to weather conditions, which relate to the greatest extent to the safety of visitors. During the winter months, guests of the national parks will have the opportunity to visit Visitor Centers where educators will interpret topics related to the natural values and cultural heritage of the protected areas. In accordance with the weather conditions, promotional walks on snowshoes will be organized, especially in NP Durmitor and NP Prokletije.

During this period, NP Durmitor recommends a walk along the Educational Path around the Black Lake, which has been cleared of snow, as well as the path over the locality ‟Vojno odmaraliste‟. However, the Park warns that during the winter period it is not recommended to hike the numerous peaks, except when the snow depth makes it possible to walk on snowshoes along the trail from Black Lake to Savin Kuk. Before planning the trip, it is necessary to get detailed information about the road and weather conditions. NP Skadar Lake will organize educational workshops for students in the Visitor Centers in Vranjina and Virpazar during the winter months in order to promote important ecological days.
